Plans are well advanced to transform Britain’s busiest shopping street into a pedestrianised Oxford Street boulevard where no taxis or buses will be allowed.
This move is expected to drastically reduce pollution, increase safety, and open up many intriguing possibilities. For example, there will be more space for pavement cafes and outdoor restaurants. More trees can be planted, soaking up more carbon dioxide and offering shade on summer days.
We can even see the new Oxford Street being thought of like other pedestrian boulevards on the continent, for example, Las Ramblas in Barcelona or Copenhagen Stroget.
